Cape Breton Music Roundup #37 - June 4 2015 - June 6 2015



 

Hey, Hey! June has arrived and with it, the Island is starting to get jumping with more and more live music every day. Check out Music Guide Cape Breton for our complete daily list of shows.
Our recommendations begin with an early weekend show at Governor's. An intimate acoustic show featuring Michale Dalton with Jonathan Kanary.
Friday kicks off with a 70's pop rock special at the Emera Centre. The Bay City Rollers will be hitting the north side. Opening will be Johnathan MacInnis & Michael Lloyd. Sounds like it should be a great show. Back in Sydney later in the night at Embers we have Newfoundland modern pop rockers RocketRocketShip with The High Tide and The Fallacy.
Our Saturday recommendations begin with the Grand Opening of the Talo Cafebar in Glace Bay. There will be an afternoon matinee with Jonathan Kanary and Collin Appleton followed by our featured evening performance from Steven MacDougall from Slowcoaster. All in all, a great day of music at Talo. Central Cape Breton will celebrating World Oceans Day on Saturday with various events taking place throughout the day and as a part of the party, Saturday night at the Iona Legion will feature Rowdy Dow. Our top recommendation of the weekend is a real east coast treat. The Privateers will be getting the pub moving at the Thistledown Pub in Baddeck. This Celtic rock group is a local favourite and never disappoint. Rounding out the weekend we move back to Governors as Halifax rock quartet Floodland hit town to promote their new EP “It’s The Fire”. They will be joined by John Paul and The Grassfire as well as Colette Deveaux for a great night of tunes.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #36 - May 28 2015 - May 30 2015



Hey All!

We are back after a couple of weeks off and what a weekend to be back. Some great shows featuring out of town bands and some great locals as well.
We're starting our weekend early with our Thursday recommendation, indie folk rockers Green & Gold with Bleu both from Newfoundland along with Carmen Townsend.
Friday, the after work recommendation is former Next Big Thing winner Lena Murphy at the Black Spoon. This will be their last buffet and entertainment before the summer, so get out and check it out. Later Friday night we have one of our co-top recommendation of the weekend with Slowcoaster tearing up Embers along with Brian Cathcart of Pretty Archie.
Saturday's first recommendation bring us to Mabou and the Red Shoe Pub as their season of live entertainment is getting going, this weekend featuring Eddie Cummings. Ambassadors for Nova Scotia music and good times, McGinty will be providing the tunes at the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre Saturday night. Local favourites Alter Ego are rocking the Sydney Mines Firemens' Centre as well on Saturday night. The second part of our co-top recommendation for this weekend is Craig Mercer performing a JSB acoustic set, along with a single release party for his band the Will Be Gones along with Jordan Musycsyn, this is going to be a great show to top a great weekend of live music around the Island.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #35 - May 8 2015 - May 9 2015



Hey Folks, we've got some great recommendations for this week, so read on and make sure to get out and take in a show or two.
Friday night our recommendations start after work with an after work party at Daniel's featuring local favorite Wills Addiction.  The Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre scores another great event, this time with Newfoundland singer-songwriter Ron Hynes. Back in Sydney at Embers we have coming from Halifax, indie rockers Mauno along with locals John Gill and Victor Tomiczek.
Saturday starts off with a special event. As part of the first Nova Scotia Craft Beer Week, check out Donal MacLennan at Big Spruce Brewing which is running a Craft Beer Event for the day. After that, you can make the quick trip down the road to Baddeck and the Bras d'Or Yacht Club for an afternoon matinee with Cyril MacPhee. Our top recommendation for the weekend is also our final for the week, the 10th Annual Estwood Davidson Memorial Bursary Concert at the Lion's Hall in St. Peter's. This show has a great lineup featuring Howie MacDonald, Patrick Gillis, Hilda Chiasson-Cormier, Donnie Campbell, Robert J Bouchard, Mckayla MacNeil, Myles Davidson, Harold Davidson and Donna Marie DeWolfe. What a show!

Cape Breton Music Roundup #34 - April 30 2015 - May 2 2015



Greetings once again! The calendar flips again this weekend as we move into May and we are kicking off the month with some great shows around the Island. Thursday night in celebration of an amazing first year, the Highland Arts Theatre presents 1 Year Hat-a-Versary a show with over 100 performers hitting the stage, this is going to be a great show. Friday we begin with an after work recommendation at the Emera Centre in North Sydney, Rob Barrie will be kicking off the after work shows for May. Darryl Keigan will be providing the tunes at the Bras d'Or Yacht Club in Baddeck a bit later in the evening as the Yacht club begins to ramp up their Spring entertainment. Our top recommendation for the weekend takes us back to the Highland Arts Theatre where Old Man Luedecke will take the stage along with Tom Terrell and the Cape Breton trio of Port Cities, this will be a great one, check it out. Signal Hill returns to the Island and our recommendations for the second week in a row on Saturday at the North Sydney Firemen's Club and will be joined by Finney Town. Also on Saturday night, Governor's has John Paul & The Grassfire with Rudy Pace & Brently Campbell along with Yvette Rogers. Closing out our weekend recommendations is local favorites Phantoms at Doryman's Tavern in Cheticamp.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #33 - April 23 2015 - April 25 2015


Greetings Once Again! As we inch ever closer to the Summer months, the live music keeps heating up right along with the weather. We've got another excellent weekend to close out April, starting on Thursday night at Governor's. If you're getting your weekend off to an early start check out this great Songwriters Circle with Carmen Townsend, Jordan Musycsyn and John Paul Bergeron. Kicking off our Friday recommendations is the always excellent live performance of Signal Hill who will be at the Main Event. Sydney has a couple of great rock shows on Friday. Governor's has the hot lineup of The Jaynes, Hash Jesus and Keith Doom and The Wrecking Crew. Meanwhile, over at Embers, we've got Long Island Road along with Blair Lucas and the Apple Corps. Good luck with that choice, although really, you can't go wrong with either. Our Saturday starts off with a Matinee recommendation in Baddeck at the Bras d'Or Yacht Club with Buddy Mac Donald. Right after that you can head on towards West Mabou for our top recommendation of the weekend with the "Thank You West Mabou" show in, of course, West Mabou at the Hall. This is going to be one heck of night with performers including Wendy MacIssac, Tracey Dares MacNeil, Rodney MacDonald, Rachel Davis, Patrick Gillis, Nuallan and more! As always this is an intimate show with limited tickets and highly, highly recommended. Cape Breton Music Roundup #32 - April 16 2015 - April 18 2015



Greetings!

Every so often there is a complete no miss weekend on the Island and this is one of them. Wherever you are this weekend from Port Hawkesbury to Sydney to Ingonish to Cheticamp there is a great show near where you are, here are some of the our top recommendations. Our early weekend Thursday shows start this week with the weekly jam at the Creignish Community Hall with lead Mac Campbell. If your on the other side of the Island on Thursday check out Governor's for a great songwriters circle featuring Danny MacNeil, Andrew Greig and John Karlsson. Moving on to Friday we have our top recommendation of the weekend coming to you from the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, Discovery Stage featuring CBRM's best emerging talent. This is going to be an excellent should featuring Gillian Head, Jofo, Black and Grey, Jordan Musycsyn Band, Blair Lucas And The Apple Corps and Pretty Archie, what a lineup! Saturday follows up with another great show for a great cause, this time at the Black Spoon in North Sydney we have A Night at the Nunnery, this show features Dawn and Margie Beaton, The Dubinsky Family and The Boularderie Babes. The show is a fundraiser for Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund by Bouldarderie MammoWarriors. Back to the west of the Island on Saturday night we have the great Elvis tribute act Thane Dane and The Cadillac Kings at the Port Hawkebury Civic Centre, as close to a live Elvis performance as you can get. Rounding out our Saturday and weekend recommendations performing at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre are The Mellotones with their tight harmonies, powerful horns and funky rhythm section, a great cap to the weekend.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #31 - April 9 2015 - April 12 2015


Hello All!

Well it looks like the big melt is on and it's about time. You can help by getting out hitting the streets and heating up the Island dancing to some great tunes. Our recommendations start early again this week with a couple of great shows on Thursday night. First up we have a great night of music and stories with Canadian Tenor Ken Lavigne and his show The Road to Carnegie Hall at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Hall in Sydney Mines. Hear Ken's story of how he got to Carnegie Hall and some great songs to go along with it, our top recommendation of the week. Later on Thursday if "the rock and roll" is more your speed, check out Governor's for Blair Lucas, Shane O'Handley and Rudy Pace. Baddeck is heating up with some great shows at the Bras d'Or Yacht Club throughout the month, starting Friday with Rob Mac Lean. On Saturday night we have a great Ceilidh for you at the Cedar's Club Hall featuring Dwayne Cote and Hilda Chiasson-Cormier.

We are also going to do a small dive into early next week with a Wednesday recommendation because we usually publish on Thursday. April 15 at Centre 200, check out Classic Albums Live - Pink Floyd's The Wall. We are big fans of the Classic Album shows and they are always worth the night out.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #30 - April 2 2015 - April 5 2015


Well it finally looks like the Spring may be on it's way but the way things have been going who knows. So make sure to use the break to get out and check out some great live music this weekend. We're starting our weekend early with an excellent show featuring Pretty Archie burning the barn down in Sydney at the Steel City. Friday after work make sure to get out and join the rest of the Shedheads at Governor's for the bluesy rock sound of the hard working Red Shed. Moving onto Saturday, in the afternoon we have an excellent lineup at the Doryman in Cheticamp featuring Marc Boudreau, Robbie Fraser and Howie MacDonald. In the evening we have our top recommendation of the weekend, Alert the Medic bring their infectious pop rockin' sound to Governor's along with Ladyslippers and Colette Deveaux. Finishing up the weekend strong is a dynamite ceilidh  in Judique with Rodney MacDonald and friends. Winter is over folks!! Cape Breton Music Roundup #29 - March 26 2015 - March 28 2015



Hey All,

Well hopefully we've seen the last of winter and a sure sign of the changes of the season is that the Vince Ryan Tournament is upon us again, with that, the weekend is packed. We're starting our weekend early once again at Governor's with a great show from Jordan Musycsyn and Anthony Burke. On Friday we pick up with an after work party at the Emera Centre on the Northside with Mark Boutlier and Robbie Simms. In what is sure to be a busy spot, the Steel City caps  our Friday night with local faves Alter Ego kicking out a few sets. Our Saturday recommendations begin with a change of pace from the rest of the weekend. Coloratura Art Gallery will be presenting Maritime piano virtuoso Lucas Porter, a great show in a unique venue, a high recommendation. Also on Saturday, bringing some tunes straight from the rock to Christmas Island Fire Hall is Newfie Trio. Our top recommendation for the weekend features a pile of local talent, including local legend Matt Minglewood, he'll be at the Main Event in Glace Bay with Emily Dingwall, Brian McInnis & Jeff Stapleton. Cape Breton Music Roundup #28 - March 19 2015 - March 22 2015



Hey All,

First, all our recommendations this week come with the caveat to call ahead and make sure the event is still a go. The first day of Spring is Friday but you wouldn't know it by looking outside, plow drivers and municipal and provincial workers are hard at it though and by Friday, hopefully everything will be good to go. It would be great if it is because this is one heck of a weekend for music all around the Island. We're starting with an early show in St. Peter's on Thursday, a jam session hosted by Jason Williams MacDonald. They will be taking donations at the door for a great cause. Thursday also features a great show in Port Hastings with a Jam hosted by Mac Campbell. Friday is simple packed. First the Songbird series continues in Little Narrows featuring Halifax based pop-folk quartet Hillsburn. These shows are amazing and our top recommendation for the weekend, tickets are limited due to the intimate nature of the show but if you are in the area or can safely get there, you should. Keith Mullins and Kim Wempe will be attempting to get Spring in gear with what will be a great show at The Dancing Goat Cafe in Margaree. The Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury has another great event lined up with Eddie Cummings, Liam Brophy and Andre Pettipas rocking the night away. If you are seeking a heavier sound, check out the return of Moxham Castle along with Vicious, from Halifax and Thirty Aught Six at Embers, a great metal combination. Saturday brings us to Governor's and a show with the Mikey Space Jam Band featuring Mike Le Lievre, Glen Bourgeois and Jordan Bruleigh of Back Pocket Material. They'll be kicking up some funky dance jams to get you up and moving. They'll be joined by Long Island Road and Blair Lucas and The Apple Corps for a complete evening. Saturday also features a mega show at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, Ice Breaker a show in support of Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative and featuring Sprag Session, Jordan Musycysn Band, Port Cities (Carleton Stone, Dylan Guthro, Breagh MacKinnon), The Beaton Sisters and more! All in all, just a great weekend for live music, get out and check it out.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #27 - March 12 2015 - March 15 2015 and St. Patrick's Day


It's starting to look a little Irish out there with St. Patrick's Day right around the corner. In that vein we've decided to include Tuesday's St. Patrick's day event's in this roundup. We start off recommendations however on Thursday night in Sydney Mines with Cape Breton Country Workhorse, Michael Lloyd at the Firemen's Centre in Sydney Mines. We follow that up on Friday night with Cape Breton expats The Gold Coast returning to the Island with support from The High Tide and Danny MacNeil Band. If you are looking to make it a full evening and night at Governor's Buddy MacDonald will be hosting the after work party. Down the road at the Highland Arts Theatre is great show to get your St. Patrick's Day weekend rolling, Evans and Doherty will be kicking out some Irish classics to get your weekend going. Saturday has a great show, great cause event going on at the Sandbar Lounge in Dominion with Singing for Shelter, a fundraiser and awareness raising event for homelessness. Saturday is just littered with St. Patrick's Day events, we've listed what we have below including a great show with Rob MacLean, Buddy MacDonald and Cyril MacPhee at the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre. Cape Breton Music Roundup #26 - March 5 2015 - March 7 2015



Time to spring ahead already. Doesn't seem like it based on the weather, does it but we have plenty of great shows to warm you up and chase away the winter blues. Speaking of blues, we have a great blues show kicking off the weekend with acclaimed Canadian blues musician Morgan Davis. Staring with the after work party and going through to the evening, gonna be a heck of a Friday night. On Saturday night, you get some extra rock, temporally speaking, at a return to the Upstairs with Ricochet, Static in Action, Hash Jesus and The Full Effect. A great way to spend, one less hour doesn't mean less awesome. Also Saturday in Cheticamp, a great show for a great cause, a fundraiser to support a Mission to Haiti featuring the Phantoms, Group Lelievre, Dawn and Margie Beaton, Douglas Cameron and Lawrence Cameron and possibly a few special guests. The Cedar's Club Hall will be hosting a dynamite ceilidh on Saturday night as well featuring Shelly Campbell, Marc Boudreau, Donna Marie DeWolf and Allan Dewar. We're not done yet as Sunday has an amazing country show at the Savoy Theatre. Former NHL draft pick and upcoming country musician Chad Brownlee. He will be accompanied by openers Jess Moskaluke and Bobby Will. All and all, one heck of a weekend for live music, get out and enjoy.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #25 - February 26 - March 1 2015



Another week, more great shows across the Island. Governor's has a couple of can't miss shows this weekend including our top recommendation with Jordan Musycysn, The Jaynes and Carmen Townsend as well as our early weekend show on Thursday featuring Pretty Archie fresh off their release of their latest album 'North End Sky'. The Spaghetti Westerns shows close out at Kiju's with Steve MacDougall of Slowco closing it out. Eddie Cummings will be getting Port Rawkesbury(see what I did there) up and rocking on Saturday night. To close out the weekend and kickoff your March, twenty days until spring believe it or not, get out to Judique for Dara MacDonald and Adam Young. Well with no sign of the weather letting up, the least you can do for yourself is get out and treat yourself to one of the excellent shows happening around the Island this weekend. Crowdis Bridge in Whycocomagh is our top recommendation for the weekend. Murder, Murder and Eastcoast Love Story will be in town this weekend stomping up Governor's.       • The Songbird Series continues in Little Narrows with Rosa and Beech Hill performing in this intimate setting. The Dynamic Dingwall Sisters Emily and Jennifer are multifaceted musicians who put on an amazing show. Also performing on this show is Mabou folk band Beech Hill. This is shaping up to be a must show.

Number 20! We have been enjoying providing you with our weekend recommendations, we hope you've enjoyed some of the great performers we've featured here. The usual suspects are in play this week for locations, Governor's, Doryman's, Emera Centre but we have some new faces here as far as artists go this week including our Thursday night early weekend show with Anthony Burke and Danny MacNeil. On the other hand we have a not so fresh face but a show you can't miss in Matt Minglewood performing at an excellent location in Whycocomagh.
