Cape Breton Music Roundup #33 - April 23 2015 - April 25 2015

Greetings Once Again! As we inch ever closer to the Summer months, the live music keeps heating up right along with the weather. We've got another excellent weekend to close out April, starting on Thursday night at Governor's. If you're getting your weekend off to an early start check out this great Songwriters Circle with Carmen Townsend, Jordan Musycsyn and John Paul Bergeron. Kicking off our Friday recommendations is the always excellent live performance of Signal Hill who will be at the Main Event. Sydney has a couple of great rock shows on Friday. Governor's has the hot lineup of The Jaynes, Hash Jesus and Keith Doom and The Wrecking Crew. Meanwhile, over at Embers, we've got Long Island Road along with Blair Lucas and the Apple Corps. Good luck with that choice, although really, you can't go wrong with either. Our Saturday starts off with a Matinee recommendation in Baddeck at the Bras d'Or Yacht Club with Buddy Mac Donald. Right after that you can head on towards West Mabou for our top recommendation of the weekend with the "Thank You West Mabou" show in, of course, West Mabou at the Hall. This is going to be one heck of night with performers including Wendy MacIssac, Tracey Dares MacNeil, Rodney MacDonald, Rachel Davis, Patrick Gillis, Nuallan and more! Check below for our full list of performers. If you're in the Central Cape Breton area or need a reason to visit, check out the final installment in The Songbird Series for the 2014/2015 season. As always this is an intimate show with limited tickets and highly, highly recommended. For "An Evening of Sonic Delights" in Sydney, check out the show with the same name at the Highland Arts Theatre featuring Redshed, Jordan Musycsyn and John Paul and the Grassfire. Whoa! What a way to end April. As always check out Music Guide Cape Breton for the information on live music for the next seven days across the Island.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #28 - March 19 2015 - March 22 2015

Hey All,

First, all our recommendations this week come with the caveat to call ahead and make sure the event is still a go. The first day of Spring is Friday but you wouldn't know it by looking outside, plow drivers and municipal and provincial workers are hard at it though and by Friday, hopefully everything will be good to go. It would be great if it is because this is one heck of a weekend for music all around the Island. We're starting with an early show in St. Peter's on Thursday, a jam session hosted by Jason Williams MacDonald. They will be taking donations at the door for a great cause. Thursday also features a great show in Port Hastings with a Jam hosted by Mac Campbell. Friday is simple packed. First the Songbird series continues in Little Narrows featuring Halifax based pop-folk quartet Hillsburn. These shows are amazing and our top recommendation for the weekend, tickets are limited due to the intimate nature of the show but if you are in the area or can safely get there, you should. Keith Mullins and Kim Wempe will be attempting to get Spring in gear with what will be a great show at The Dancing Goat Cafe in Margaree. The Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury has another great event lined up with Eddie Cummings, Liam Brophy and Andre Pettipas rocking the night away. If you are seeking a heavier sound, check out the return of Moxham Castle along with Vicious, from Halifax and Thirty Aught Six at Embers, a great metal combination. Saturday brings us to Governor's and a show with the Mikey Space Jam Band featuring Mike Le Lievre, Glen Bourgeois and Jordan Bruleigh of Back Pocket Material. They'll be kicking up some funky dance jams to get you up and moving. They'll be joined by Long Island Road and Blair Lucas and The Apple Corps for a complete evening. Saturday also features a mega show at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, Ice Breaker a show in support of Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative and featuring Sprag Session, Jordan Musycysn Band, Port Cities (Carleton Stone, Dylan Guthro, Breagh MacKinnon), The Beaton Sisters and more! All in all, just a great weekend for live music, get out and check it out.

    • Like a Motorcycle with Hash Jesus & Lady Slippers - Governor's Pub, Sydney

      • What a show to kickoff the early weekend. Hard rocking Like a Motorcycle will be hitting the studio to record a new album but before that they will be taking names and kicking ass at Governor's backed by Hash Jesus and Lady Slippers this is our top recommendation of the weekend so make sure to get out and get your weekend started early.
  • Friday January 30, 2015
    • Richard Wood & Gordon Belsher - Old Triangle Irish Alehouse, Sydney
      • 7 PM
      • No Cover Charge
      • A personal favourite duo here, Richard Wood and Gordon Belsher put on quite the live show. Upbeat tunes that will keep you moving mixed with some great on stage personality. They are playing several shows at the Old Triangle over this weekend, get out to one of them, you won't regret it.
  • Saturday January 31 2015
    • Rosa and Beech Hill - Little Narrows Community Centre, Little Narrows
      • 7 PM
      • $15
      • The Songbird Series continues in Little Narrows with Rosa and Beech Hill performing in this intimate setting. The Dynamic Dingwall Sisters Emily and Jennifer are multifaceted musicians who put on an amazing show. Also performing on this show is Mabou folk band Beech Hill. This is shaping up to be a must show.
    • Kristen Shaw, Haillee Lefort and Hilda Chaisson - West Mabou Hall, West Mabou
      • 10 PM
      • $8
      • The fiddles will flying in West Mabou on Saturday Night. A great show featuing Kristen Shaw, Haillee Lefort and Hilda Chaisson backing on Piano. With Shaw and Lefort lighting it up on the fiddle this is the kind of show that chases the cold Cape Breton winters night away.

    • Jofo with Mitchell Bailey - Main Event, Glace Bay

      • $10
      • Do you have enough live hip-hop in your life? If the answer is no then I have the solution, Jofo with Mitchell Bailey at the Main Event. With a unique blend of pop and hip hop, Jofo is carving out his own sound. If you've never been to a show like this, then it's a must do, hip hop shows like these are high energy, high danceability and high fun.
    • The Motorleague with The Dying Arts and Dead Skanks - Fox Den Bar and Grill, Sydney
      •  10 PM
      • If you attend this show. It will be a good time (sung to the chorus of We are Chemical). Yes I know it's awful, my lyrics, not the Motorleague of course but the sentiment is correct, this will be an excellent show. Supported by the Dying Arts from Toronto and Dead Skanks, this seems like an excellent way to rock up your Friday Night.
