Iona - Highland VIllage - Donald Og Day - 2014

After helping the British defeat the French during the siege of Louisbourg in 1758, Donald Og MacNeil traveled the Bras D'Or Lakes and brought news of the natural wonders there back to his native home of Barra, Scotland. Join in on a celebration of the legend of Donald Og and the early European settlement of Cape Breton. Rod C. MacNeil, a direct descendant of Donald Og, will be telling tales of his great-great-great grandfather and his settling in Cape Breton. Traditional food, natural dye, barvas ware and other demonstrations will take place throughout the day, along with a special running of Cash’s Carding Mill. As well, the Fortress of Louisbourg special events troupe will be on site.

A ceilidh or social gathering is a chance to get together to swap stories sing songs and dance the evening away. These are a great chance to learn about Gaelic history and experience the culture first hand.
Làithean Sona/Happy Days Chidren’s Living History Program / Na Deugairean/ The Teenagers Living History Program for Youth
A living history program for children (or teens). This hands on experience gives children a chance to see what life was like for the Gaelic people of the past. Activities include chores, games, language and of course songs! Costumes are provided. Definitely a unique experience. $45 per child.
Milling Frolic
Come see fresh wool pass through the loom on it's way to becoming blankets and clothing. In order to make the cloth ready to wear Gaelic people would wet it and beat it. They would use this time to get together and sing songs in rhythm to help the work pass. If you have a chance make sure to get out and see a milling frolic.

Iona - Highland Village Museum
Iona - Highland Village Museum
Located just off Highway 223 in Iona is the Highland Village Museum. Described as an outdoor living history museum it offers one of the more unique experiences on the island.
Hear the stories of Gaelic settlements as you move about the 11 historic buildings of the Museum. The buildings are staffed with costumed animators who share stories and information about Gaelic culture and the history of Cape Breton and it's settling.
The view from atop the hill on which the museum is located is truly breathtaking and the buildings themselves are amazing and alive with the history of the area.
A walk through the museum is like a walk through time as you will see the various ways homes were built throughout Gaelic history. Highly recommended to anyone visiting from away who happens to be a history buff or anyone local who just hasn't been. Various events throughout the season make it a great place to visit more than once.
