Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites - Point Michaud
Point Michaud
Located near the village of St Peter's is the world class beach Point Michaud. This massive beach is very popular destination for anyone looking to cool off for the day or just simply looking for a destination at the end of a great drive. One of the highlights of Point Michaud is the surfing, there are lessons everyday from July 1 to August 31, offered on the beach between 10 am and 5 pm. Lessons are for anyone age 5 and up. Change rooms/washrooms are on-site, canteen is nearby.
Protip: Snacks at Macbouch Tavern after a day on the beach!

Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites - Kennington Cove
Kennington Cove
Ahhh, the waves at Kennington Cove. Located just outside the town of Louisbourg, tucked away down a dirt road is one of the more popular beaches on Cape Breton. Known for it's large waves, often suitable for surfing. The water can be cool in the early part of the summer, as most ocean beaches in Cape Breton can be, making great for cooling off. A park is located near by with picnic tables and washrooms/change rooms. Best to bring a snack as there is not usually a canteen nearby.

Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites - Polar Bear
Polar Bear
Sounds a bit chilly doesn't it! Well Polar Bear does get it's name from the cool ocean waters that pound down on the beach but don't think of it as cold as much as a great place to get cool on hot summers day. Polar Bear is a bit of a local hideaway, getting down to the beach can be a bit of an issue as there are no stairs down the side of the hill that leads to the beach and the rocky terrain can be tough to navigate. A railing is in place to assist. No washrooms or change rooms near by and I would recommend bringing a snack if you plan on staying for awhile but if you are looking for something close to Sydney and still tucked out of the way or just looking for a quick cool down, Polar Bear is the place.

Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites - Mira Gut
Mira Gut
Mira Gut is great beach, especially if you are looking for a social day. The beach is always full of pleasant people. The beach line can be right next to the road or what seems like kilometers away depending on the tide. Sometimes it feels like your going to have to walk to Newfoundland to get under the water! The low water level is great for those who are not really looking to swim, just to cool down and it can make it easy to keep an eye on children. Their are washrooms and change rooms on site, as well as a canteen in the summer. If busy, which it often is in the summer months, parking can be a bit of an issue so make sure to get their early or just be ready to walk a bit to get to the beach.
Protip: Jumping off the bridge, but be extremely careful of the undertow (Not recommended for children).

Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites - Iona
Iona Beach
Located in the beautiful community of Iona, Iona Beach is located next to the government wharf, your first right after the bridge. This is one of my all time favourite spots and allows you to swim in the wonderful Bras d'Or Lakes. If swimming isn't your thing, the wharf has been known to be an excellent spot for fishing. MacCormack Beach Provincial Park is located further up the hill and provides change/wash rooms and and is a great spot to stop for a quick snack if you have one packed. Grand Narrows convenience is located on the other side of the bridge down Grand Narrows Dr., there is also an NSLC located in the store. As well, just past the convenience store is Grand Narrows Waterfront.
Protip: Jumping off the wharf! Seriously
Protip 2: If returning towards Sydney/North Sydney - Beaver Cove Convenience for snacks and or ice cream.

Places to go, Things to see
Cape Breton Island is full of fun, I have stayed in many places and did many things. In this blog I am going to discuss some key places to visit.1) Louisbourg- Now I am bias to Louisbourg, being from there. However, it is so much fun! You can do hikes, such as the lighthouse trail. It takes you along some amazing coast line, many beaches and some great places to sit and have a picnic! You can also head down to the wharf and watch some locals fish, even join in. My favorite festivity in Louisbourg is Crab Fest! Hundreds of people gather for a crab dinner and mussels and some drinks and dancing later in the evening. It is always a good time for people from the local community and tourists alike. The fortress is amazing, you can buy local bread, made in a brick oven, have food, witness cannon firings, and see how people lived in the 18th century. Also this is a big year, Louisbourg 300!
According to the Parks Canada website (http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/ns/louisbourg/activ/louisbourg300.aspx) they describe Louisbourg 300 as "A major attraction that cannot be overlooked is the Fortress of Louisbourg, and it is Louisbourg 300 this year. A big celebration! Get ready for a celebration three centuries in the making! Join us in 2013 for Louisbourg300, a grand fête marking the 300th anniversary of the founding of Île Royale – modern day Cape Breton Island – and its capital, Louisbourg. Special events will be held throughout the 2013 visitor season, so any time is the perfect time to visit!" Also, when visiting Louisbourg don't miss the chance to see Little Lorraine and Main-a-Dieu. Great tiny fishing towns!
2) Margaree- I love Margaree, the awesome river to go fishing in, the tiny friendly towns and awesome scenery. There are some cute farms there that you can check out, some places to go fishing, horseback riding, hikes, or many cabins to rent and have some people out on a deck BBQing and enjoying a cold one.
3) Baddeck- I stayed here alot for work (during the winter months) and it was fun then too! Its a nice little town right on the water. Alot of charm and character. Its a good starting point if you want to do the cabot trail. You can d0 a whale watching tour, get an amazing view of Alexander Graham Bells home, see an island full of birds and get a look at the rich yachts docked in the harbor. Baddeck is great for history too! Baddeck is home to the first powered flight in Canada and the British Empire. There is a museum about Alexander Graham Bell and all his accomplishments that you can visit and to make this town even more fun, there is one of the best golf courses in Cape Breton- Bell Bay. For the avid golfer, this is your town! You can also head to any restaurant or hotel during the evening for some live entertainment and a good brew.
4) Meat Cove- I LOVE MEAT COVE! Its the very top of the island, you really have to go out of your way to get there, but when you do, your mouth will drop with the views. Imagine travelling on a tiny road, over a tiny bridge and then being on the top of the world, this is how it is. Soon as you get there be sure to get out of your car and head to your closest view point (which will probably be a cliff, so dont get too close to the edge) and you will see nothing but rolling hills, deep blue ocean smashing against rocks and the most amazing sunrise/sunset. A must see when you are in Cape Breton!
5) Ingonish- Ingonish has a great beach, the Keltic Lodge (with great food) and local music. Its a wonderful spot to go relax, hike and check out the highland national park. That Park is wonderful! There are natural waterfalls, moose sightings, great hikes, spectacular views and stunning beaches! These are a few of my favorite places in Cape Breton, be sure to check back for live music venues and good eats! Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites - Ingonish
Ingonish
Ingonish beach is located within the Highlands National Park. This is a truly excellent beach, beautiful in the summer months. Located in a cove off the Atlantic Ocean, the water maybe cooler in the early season but that only makes it a better spot to cool off. Some days has some great waves for splashing around in. There is a campground near by as well as hiking trails and other amenities. A canteen is on site during the summer months and there are washrooms and change rooms available. The beach is also backed by a freshwater lake if you are looking for a different swimming experience.

Cape Breton Beaches - Favorites
Hey All,Cape Breton quite literally has beaches everywhere. No really it's an island, drive twenty minutes in any direction and you'll probably hit water, so this is not an extensive list of beaches, although I'll probably mention more as the summer goes along, this is a list of my personal favourite, with links to the writeups. These are in no particular order.
