Nova Scotia has new Holiday this year, Heritage Day. In celebration several locations are having events. Check out below for some festivities.

Louisbourg Celebrates: Heritage Day
Sunday, February 22 from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM.  

  • Special focus on 50 years of the Canadian flag. Test your knowledge with a flag quiz, sing the national anthem during the raising of the flag and get some fresh air with our first ever played Capture the Flag game. 
  • Warm up beside the campfire in the King's Bastion courtyard with marshmallow roasting and Heritage hot chocolate. Bring a picnic and your snowshoes. Audio-guided tours of the grounds will also be available.

Fortress of Louisbourg - Ride Into The Past - 2014

For the bicycle enthusiast out there or just for someone looking for something interesting to do and good for you, check out this Bicycle tour of from the Royal Battery at the Fortress to Kennington Cove beach. Hosted by Velo Cape Breton, this is a dirt road, mountain bike would be best. If you need to arrange a rental beforehand, touch base with Eliot (the tour host) who can direct you to the local bike shop for meeting your needs.

Sydney - Ghosts & Legends of Historic Sydney Walking Tour - 2014

A few dates remain for these walking tours of Sydney.  Happening each Thursday inclusive to Oct. 23rd, come out and join with costumed guides on this spine tingling tour of the North End of Sydney. You'll hear stories of every haunted house, graveyard and ghostly visions that will keep you on edge.  It's a great way to get out and hear of the colourful history of the area and also the walk is great for keeping in shape.

Each 90-minute  tour departs and ends at St. Patrick’s Church Museum, 87 Esplanade, with a cup of teas and traditional Cape Breton sweets.

This will be Cape Breton's first Craft Beer and Local Food Festival. Fortress of Louisbourg - Louisbourg by Night: Lantern Tours - 2014

For anyone interested in the darker side of Louisbourg, the ghosts and haunting's of various old structures to the lost souls of shipwrecks past walking the streets of the old fortress, come out for this wonderful night of touring those same streets of the lit only by lanterns candle light. Fortress of Louisbourg - Founders Feast - 2014

Fortress of Louisbourg - Learn to Camp:18th Century Style - 2014

This sounds like it could be a ton of fun. As part of the the Learn to Camp series of events you'll discover how to pitch a tent, learn camping skills and go back in time to the 1700s. You'll be camping out on the Waterfront Quay under the starry night sky unobstructed by city lights the view is breath taking.  Everything you need to learn to camp, 18th century style will be provided so come out and enjoy yourself.

Marion Bridge - Acoustic Roots Festival - 2014


Come to the beautiful Two Rivers Wildlife Park for the second annual Acoustic Roots Festival.  The festival is a genre spanning event including Folk, Blues, Celtic, Country and Bluegrass performers. The event also doubles as a fundraiser for the Wildlife Park so come out, enjoy some great music and support a great cause.

St Peter's - Cape Breton Paddlefest - 2014

If you enjoy canoeing, kayaking or stand-up-paddleboarding this is this is the weekend event for you. Cape Breton Paddlefest is happening September 5th-7th, 2014 in St. Peter’s.  The event will feautre paddling skills and safety clinics, local guided paddling tours as well as time for socializing and networking with others  in the backdrop of beautiful and historic St. Peter’s.

Fortress of Louisbourg - LouisRocks - Men of the Deeps and Barra MacNeils - 2014

Following up a big night from Jimmy Rankin and Coig isn't an easy task, however this show on Sunday August 24th is one that can do it.  Featuring Cape Breton staples the Men of the Deeps and The Barra MacNeils.

The Men of The Deeps

A choir of working and retired coal miners from Cape Breton Island.  The Men of the Deeps have been moving audiences since 1966.  Singing the life and work of the Cape Breton Coal Miner, this is a show which is a must for anyone who truly wants to feel Cape Breton.

The Barra MacNeils

For over 27 years The Barra MacNeils have been entertaining audiences on and off of Cape Breton Island.  The family based Cape Breton band from Sydney Mines are one of the top Celtic bands in the world and an act that is enjoyed by a diverse range of audiences

Cóig

Còig ( "Ko-ig". Scottish Gaelic for 'five') is basically a Cape Breton Celtic supergroup.  Originally formed as a promotional band for Celtic Colours, these five entertainers have come together to play in support of their new album "Five".  All are busy solo performers so don't miss this chance to get out and see them play together.

Christmas Island - Féis An Eilein - 2014

Running from August 19th – 23rd in Christmas Island is the  24th Annual Féis an Eilein.  This Christmas Island Féis was the first Féis held outside of Scotland.  Designed to promote Gaelic language and culture through educational and social activities, the Féis features events for all ages.  Always a great time with great people and things to do.  See below for a schedule of events.

  • Tuesday August 19
    • 8 PM - Cuirm-Chiùil Na Féise The Féis Week Concert
      • Admission $12 / Children 14 and under $6 
      • Tonight Bean an Taighe Betty Lord welcomes an exciting line-up of dynamic duos as Halifax-based sisters Cassie and Maggie MacDonald perform in their first Féis appearance, sharing the stage with pipers Rankin MacInnis and Michael MacMillan, and crowd favourites Howie MacDonald and Mac Morin. Local dancers Christina MacNeil and Meaghan O’Handley, and Andy MacMullin of Boisdale will join Anita and Lauren tonight to provide some driving steps. You won’t want to miss this high energy evening!

    •  10 AM – 4 PM Gaelic Language Classes
      • Admission $25/per day / Seniors & Students $10 Lunch provided.
      • Angus MacLeod from the North Shore will instruct the beginner class. It is designed for students who have taken part in classes employing the GAB immersion methodology, and will examine Gaelic spelling, basic grammar and sentence structure in order to broaden students’ understanding of how the language works. Students will also work on how to make the sounds in Gaelic that aren’t heard in English, the importance of long vowel sounds, Gaelic rhythm, and other subjects related to getting an authentic Gaelic sound to a student’s speech.
      • Educator Margie Beaton from Mabou will instruct the intermediate/advanced class. Students attending “Dòigh eile air a ràdh,” will take a look at the different ways the Gaels have of expressing themselves on particular topics through the use of songs, stories, pictures, and real life situations. This class would be suitable for those who wish to expand on their vocabulary and make more use of idioms and expressions.
    • 7:30 PM - Ar Seanachas, Ar Daoine agus Ar n-Àiteachan - Our Stories, Our People and our Places

      • Each community in the Gaelic world had an active and lively tradition of song composition. Songs from central Cape Breton were made by people such as Bean Iain Ruaridh, John V. MacNeil (the millionaire bard), Malcolm MacNeil, and Lauchie Currie. Who were these composers and what were there songs about? Do these songs matter in our modern world? This evening’s event pays tribute to them and examines some of the issues around retaining their songs in the 21st century.
      • Join Bean an Taighe Lorrie MacKinnon as she welcomes Winnie and Paul MacDonald of Ironville, Maxie MacNeil of Highland Hill, and other special guests as they explore some of the composers and singers from our area and the music they created.

      • Singers once gathered around the milling table to keep a constant rhythm while pounding newly-woven cloth; now the work is done for the sheer pleasure and to keep the songs and culture alive. This milling frolic is one of the best known on Cape Breton Island and is not to be missed! Tea and lunch will be served.

      • Students will be taught conversational Gaelic through the TIP/Gàidhlig Aig Baile method which utilizes body language and oral repetition.
    • 12 PM – 1:30 PM - Songs in the Kitchen – Òrain anns a’ Chidsin

      • This workshop instructed by Betty Lord offers a variety of song types from puirt-a-beul to lullabies and songs suited to just singing along together. Participants will come away with a selection of songs that they can sing in a number of different settings.
    • 2 PM – 3:30 PM - Step-Dance Workshop
      • Admission $6 
      • The beginner class with Lauren MacDonald is designed for those with no previous instruction in traditional Cape Breton step-dance. This intermediate/advanced class led by Anita MacDonald is designed for those who wish to improve their steps and to learn new steps, and who have an understanding of the rhythms of the steps, as well as some previous instruction.
    • 2 PM -3:30 PM - Gaelic Song Circle – Sreath de dh’Òrain

Cabot Trail - Cabot Trail Acoustic Festival - 2014

Coming to the Cabot Shores, Indian Brook, Cape Breton Island from Aug 22-24, 2014 is the Cabot Trail Acoustic Festival featuring main stage headliners Charlie A'Court & Christine Campbell, other artists include  Decota McNamara and LeeBoy.  The festival features open mikes, workshops, camping and other activities on site.  The festival is being hosted on the Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort, located on the Cabot Trail and featuring breathtaking views, beachfront, a waterfall and much more. There will be food available in the main Chalet and a daily BBQ, as well as showers and washroom facilities.

St Ann's - Festival of Cape Breton Fiddling - 2014

Presented by the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association comes two days of everything fiddle.  Workshops, jams, square dance and more.  A little bit for everyone, so make sure to get out an enjoy some of the best fiddle anywhere!
