Cape Breton Music Roundup #16 - December 12 - December 14 2014

Well the weather is just being awful, so no Thursday recommendations this week, there are some great shows going on though check out Music Guide Cape Breton for more info, just no recos (seriously blame the weather). We have a full weekend is another reason why we're cutting it down to Friday night and the weekend proper, including our first recommendation for the Phoenix in North Sydney featuring Black Tooth Grinn. The Jayne's are at Governor's and Zaum at the Fox Den on Saturday. We've got a great ceilidh in Judique on Sunday as well as multiple weekend Christmas shows from Lyrics & Laughter in Louisbourg and Happy Ha Ha Holidaze in Glacebay. Seriously, just a ton going on this weekend, check it all out at Music Guide Cape Breton and our recommendations are below the YouTube playlist.

      • Supper served before music from 6 PM - 7 PM
      • Adult plate - $12; Child/Senior plate - $8
      • Second week in a row we're recommending the Friday show at the Legion. If you haven't been out to one of these, make it an evening and get on out. Start out the evening with a delicious roast pork diner followed by Keith Mullins to make your evening complete.
    • Black Tooth Grinn, Wazzo and Machinegun Headlight - Phoenix Nightclub, North Sydney
      • 10 PM
      • $8
      • Our first recommendation for the Phoenix Nightclub in North Sydney features the always hard rocking Black Tooth Grinn with Wazzo and Machinegun Headlight. If you need some hard rockin' in your weekend, the north side is the place to be.

    • The Jaynes, Rad & Subtract and Long Island Road - Governor's Pub, Sydney
      • 10:30 PM
      • $8
      • Indie rock quartet The Jaynes bring their unique sounds to Governor's on Saturday night joined that evening by heavy rocking Rad & Subtract and bluesy Long Island Road. This show has a really unique mix of sounds so if you're looking for something different with some variety, check it out.
    • Zaum, The Full Effect and Stepwise - Fox Den Bar and Grill, Sydney
      • 10 PM
      • Zaum, based in Moncton New Brunswick takes their atmospheric, heavy sound to the Fox Den on Saturday night along with The Full Effect and Stepwise. Zaum has very heavy, trippy sound. Come out and get locked into a trance and whisked away to far off land.
  • Sunday December 14 2014
    • Donna Marie DeWolfe - Celtic Music Interpretive Centre, Judique
      • 3 PM
      • $8
      • Sunday Ceilidhs in Judique, a must if you are in or near Judique if not, here's the plan, pack up some friends or a significant other or both and head to Judique for some great tunes on a Sunday. It's a bit of a long trip if you are on the eastern side of the island but a drive across the Island is beautiful any time of year and some great tunes on the other side is always worth it.

Cape Breton Music Roundup #15 - December 4 - December 7 2014

The holidays are ramping up with a few great Christmas related shows  this weekend. We've got David Myles in Port Hawkesbury along with The Eddie Cummings band, which is not listed below because we couldn't get the show time but "Hawkesbury" seems like it could be the "place to be" this weekend. The challenger to the crown of "place to be" could very well be Louisbourg which features holiday shows by the Yarnells as well as the Beaton sisters. The Yarnells will be rocking the playhouse and the Beatons will be at the Fortress in what really is a rare chance to take in a holiday show in the King's Bastion chapel.  Check out all our recommendations below and as always check out Music Guide Cape Breton for our full list of shows.

  • Thursday December 4 2014
    • Décota McNamara - Governor's Pub, Sydney
      • 10:30 PM
      • $6
      • Many of our recommendations start with a Thursday night show at Governor`s, and for good reason, excellent shows like this to get the weekend started early and correctly. Come out an enjoy some great songs and amazing guitar playing from Decota MacNamara.
  • Friday December 5 2014
    • Dave Sampson and Carleton Stone - Kiju`s Restaurant, Membertou
      •  7:30 PM
      • Call for reservations
      • An intimate setting for this one for sure. Dave Sampson and Carleton stone will be up close and personal at Kiju`s in Membertou for an evening of stories, song and delicious eats.
    • Pius MacIsaac & Kevin Levesconte - Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124, Iona
      • 7 PM
      • Dinner at 6 - Adult $12, Child/Senior $8
      • We've mentioned the weekly Friday Ceilidh in Iona before. If you are in the area it's definitely worth the trip out, if not, get in the area. Dinner is served before the show, this weeks Ceilidh features Pius MacIsaac and Kevin Levesconte, so a great show with some wonderful food.
  • Saturday December 6 2014
    • David Myles - SAERC Centre, Port Hawkesbury
      • 8PM
      • $28
      • David Myles hits Port Hawkesbury performing songs from his aptly titled "It's Christmas". Just in time for the holidays and sure to bubble up the Christmas spirit in all attending. This is our top recommendation of the weekend.
    • A Christmas Evening with the Yarnells - Playhouse, Louisbourg
      • 7:30 PM
      • $15
      • More Christmas fun, this time at the Playhouse in Louisbourg. The Yarnells featuing some of the best young musicians the Island has to offer and will be kicking out the Christmas cheer all night long.
    • John Paul & The Grassfire, The High Tide & Tony McQuaid - Governor's Pub, Sydney
      • 10:30 PM
      • $7
      • Our non-Christmas recommendation for Saturday is a night of great pop, rock and folk featuring John Paul & The Grassfire, The High Tide & Tony McQuaid at Governor's pub. So if your not feeling the Christmas spirit or just aren't able to make the holiday events, Governor's has you covered.
  • Sunday December 7 2014
    • Dawn and Margie Beaton - Fortress of Louisbourg, Louisbourg
      • 2 PM
      • $25
      • This is a once a year kind of event. The Beaton sisters in the Fortress King's Bastion chapel for a special holiday performance. A very highly recommended show for us, you really won't get another chance to take something like this in for quite a while.
**Non Music Weekend Shoutout!**
  • Annual Christmas Daddies Telethon
    • Saturday December 8
    • 11 AM - 6 PM
    • CTV (Check your listings for channel number)
