Sydney - Action Week - Events - 2014



Another Action Week is upon us! Nine days of events and activities for the whole family.  Since 1974, Action Week has been a cornerstone event for mid-summer in Sydney.  We have some links to specific events below and further down a list of all events. Make sure to get out to as much as you can, you won't regret it!

  • FRIDAY, AUGUST 1
    • 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. - CAPE BRETON OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT 
      •  Semi- Finals. Singles, Doubles, Mixed Events. Cromarty Tennis Club, 64 Cromarty Street. 
      • Free admission to all. For information phone 564-6666.
    • 11:00 a.m. – Dusk – CAPE BRETON BIKE RALLY VENDOR VILLAGE
      •  Presented by Island Strong Motorcycle Association. Located around Centre 200 & Casino Nova Scotia, 481 George Street. Everyone welcome. Take a stroll through the village and shop around for some great buys and unique merchandise that’s only here once a year.
    • 2:00 – 5:30 p.m. – KAPER KARAOKE
      • Stage at Bike Rally Vendor Village. Their music library has over 120,000 songs! Come down and pick out your favorite tune and show us what you’ve got and get a chance to win some prizes!
    • 7:00 p.m. – THEATER FESTIVAL PREVIEW  
      • Summer Nights: Food, Family, Friendship. Presented by the Cape Breton Stage Company at The Highland Arts Theatre Studio Stage (former St. Andrews Church), Bentinck Street. Admission by donation.
    • 7:00 p.m. - “TAKE BACK THE NIGHT” WALK & CONCERT
      • Sydney Boardwalk Stage area. Sponsored by the Elizabeth Fry Society of Cape Breton. The purpose of this event is to take a stance on the issue of violence against women, while empowering women and girls in our community. The walk leaves from behind the Civic Centre, goes to Dorchester, onto Charlotte Street, down Townsend Street and back to the stage area at the Boardwalk. The Walk is followed by a CONCERT at 8:00 p.m. featuring Yvette Rogers, Janet Bickerton followed by the Carmen Townsend Band.
    • 8:00 p.m. – CAPE BRETON BIKE RALLY PARADE OF COLOURS 
      • Bike clubs will assemble at the rear of Target and parade up Townsend Street, down George Street, turn behind Centre 200 past the Vendor Village and line up on Liberty Street. Followed by live entertainment at Vendor Village. Free admission.
  • SATURDAY, AUGUST 2
    • 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. – KIWANIS PANCAKE BREAKFAST 
      • on the Sydney Boardwalk in the “Community Room” - lower level, Civic Centre, Esplanade. Sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Sydney & Smitty’s Restaurant. Enjoy hot pancakes, sausages, coffee, tea or juice served by members of the Sydney Kiwanis Club. Tickets available at the door -

      • Performances by: Patrick Drake (magician); Ryunosuke Yamazumi (big ball juggler & Chinese Pole artist); Le Duo Sequoia (circus performers perform hula hoop stunts, diabolos & fire stunts); Oparty (balancing acts, fire juggling, sideshow acts).

      • on the Sydney Boardwalk Stage - featuring JOHN GRACIE. Presented by Eastlink. Come swing under the stars with multiple award winning recording artist, John Gracie. John has brought this show all over the globe from the Ritz Carleton in Doha, Qatar to jazz festivals and casinos across Canada. John and his swing band will bring you the popular music of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and more. 
      • This is a free concert. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the performance.

      • Presented by Old Sydney Society. Join us on a spine-chilling ghost walking tour of the haunted streets of Sydney. Leaves St. Patrick’s Church Museum, 87 Esplanade. A costumed animator leads participants through a 90 minute tour of Sydney’s haunted historic district. Tour returns to St. Patrick’s for refreshments. Reservations required @ 539-1572.
